Call to Action: GaDOE Representation
Advocacy Call to Action
Donita Hinckley, Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) Library Media and Resource Specialist, will be retiring on July 31, 2023, and there has been no posting to fill this position to date. Since there was a gap in library media specialist representation between Judy Serritella’s term and Donita’s move into the role, we strongly encourage Georgia library media specialists to contact GaDOE to share concerns about this situation.
The GaDOE library media specialist
- supports Georgia library media specialists, schools, districts, and RESAs with school library media updates and professional learning;
- communicates GaDOE initiatives and facilitates the GaDOE Library Media Community online;
- coordinates professional learning networks such as district media coordinators and smaller libraries focus groups;
- provides critical book challenge support in the current volatile climate;
- fields questions regarding library media policies, procedures, and regulations from school district administrators, media coordinators, and library media specialists across the state;
- liaisons with media specialist preparation program directors, GALILEO, the Georgia Public Library System, and state level coordinators across the United States.
Timely, informed communication and support is always important, but the potential for beginning a new school year without a certified media specialist at GaDOE is particularly troubling. Questions from new administrators and media specialists, book challenge concerns, and lost professional learning and networking opportunities will likely result in confusion and frustration at least without designated support.
Please share your concerns with Matt Jones, Chief of Staff, plus other GaDOE personnel listed here as soon as possible to alert them to the urgent need to post and fill this upcoming vacancy.
